Secure Frameless Glass Terrace for Air Products' Surrey Head Office

Designed, Supplied & Installed

OVERVIEW

Total Security Protection, a highly reputable security company approached 360 GSS to design and install a secure, modern glass boundary for their client’s new head office in Surrey. Air Products, a global leader in industrial gases and technologies, sought a firm to create a visually appealing outdoor terrace that provided security from the adjacent car park while maintaining an open, welcoming aesthetic for employees.

However, the site presented a significant challenge: the tree-lined perimeter was surrounded by mature root systems, meaning conventional foundations and in-ground structural steelwork would compromise the surrounding natural environment. Our team proposed an innovative, eco-conscious solution that combined above-ground steelwork with concealed structural design – balancing function, aesthetics, and sustainability.

CHALLENGE

Security Requirement – Prevent direct access from the public car park into the building’s side terrace without compromising appearance or accessibility. Environmental Sensitivity – Existing tree roots and mature landscaping needed full preservation. Structural Integrity – The glass structure needed to be safe, durable, and meet UK standards for commercial outdoor guarding.

SOLUTION

360 GSS designed and delivered a stunning bespoke frameless glass terrace enclosure that masterfully blends function with form. Running 20 metres along a tree-lined boundary, the curved glass feature was engineered using seven custom-fabricated 3-metre galvanised steel frames. These were anchored in place with mini helical piles driven by hand-held air tools, avoiding any damage to surrounding tree roots. Structural elements were concealed beneath treated timber cladding, providing both durability and a warm, continuous seating area within the terrace.

The enclosure combines toughened and laminated safety glass at 1.8m high, with sandblasted lower sections for privacy and climb prevention, while maintaining clear upper panels for uninterrupted views and light. A 12-metre straight section incorporates nine glass panels and a 1-metre wide framed gate with electronic keypad access, sprung hinges, and a colour-matched finish. A 4-metre return to the main building completes the enclosure with stepped-height glass, flawlessly integrated for visual harmony. All materials and fixings – including 6m³ of concrete – were supplied and installed by 360 GSS, with meticulous care taken during groundworks, steelwork assembly, bench construction, and glass installation to ensure a durable and refined final result.

RESULT

Security Enhanced – The new terrace effectively restricts access from the car park while preserving a light, open-air design. Eco-Friendly Design – All tree roots remained undisturbed, thanks to a no-dig foundation solution, with sustainable materials used throughout. Aesthetic Appeal – The treated timber seating and frameless glass provide a refined, contemporary finish that complements the natural surroundings.

CONCLUSION

This project showcases 360 GSS’s expertise in delivering bespoke, environmentally sensitive architectural solutions. By rethinking traditional installation methods and embracing innovative engineering, we created a secure, visually appealing terrace that fits seamlessly into the natural landscape without compromising safety or sustainability.
