NEW STAGE ROOM

ST GEORGE’S SCHOOL

OVERVIEW

St. George’s School in Windsor sought to transform their traditional stage room into a multifunctional space that embraced both performance and modern learning. While continuing to host plays and productions, the school wanted to integrate multimedia capabilities by using the proscenium arch as a projection screen. Outside of performances, the goal was to repurpose the room into a sensory-rich environment to support diverse learning needs. The vision required a seamless blend of tradition and innovation – a space that could flex effortlessly between theatre and interactive learning.

CHALLENGE

One of the biggest obstacles was the absence of architectural drawings, making it difficult to determine whether the existing structure could support the large soundproof doors needed for the transformation. The school also needed a solution that maintained the charm and heritage of the space, while allowing for modern functionality. Achieving this transformation with minimal disruption to the building’s integrity and within the scope of the school’s operational needs was key.

SOLUTION

To address these challenges, St. George’s School partnered with 360 GSS, who led the structural and technical transformation. A custom steel frame was designed, fabricated, and installed to support the folding door system and reinforce the original architecture. This independent frame offered the structural stability required without relying on the existing walls. Working closely with Becker, large frameless folding doors were designed and installed to glide effortlessly across a bespoke track. When closed, these doors formed a clean, high-quality surface that transformed the proscenium arch into a functional projection screen – perfect for multimedia-rich productions. When not used as a theatre, the space was designed to shift into a vibrant sensory room. This immersive learning environment provided pupils with an engaging, inclusive space for exploration, creativity, and sensory development. The entire setup was engineered with ease of use in mind, allowing teachers and staff to transition between configurations quickly and effortlessly.

RESULT

The completed transformation received exceptional feedback from students, teachers, and school leadership. The flexibility of the room has greatly enriched the educational experience, turning it into a dynamic hub of performance and play. Whether used for a theatrical production or sensory learning, the space delivers an immersive environment that inspires curiosity, creativity, and collaboration.

CONCLUSION

This project is a shining example of how traditional educational spaces can be reimagined through thoughtful design and innovative technology. The collaboration between St. George’s School and 360 GSS resulted in a future-ready stage room that balances performance heritage with interactive, inclusive learning. It’s now more than just a stage – it’s a space where stories come to life, imaginations are sparked, and every student feels empowered to engage, learn, and thrive.
