Frameless Glass Balcony Installation with Structural Piling

Designed, Supplied & Installed by 360 GSS

OVERVIEW

360 GSS was commissioned to design, engineer, supply, and install a bespoke frameless glass balcony system for a residential property in Hampshire. The existing structure previously supported a timber balcony, but the client wanted to upgrade to a modern glass system that would provide a more contemporary appearance, improved durability, and uninterrupted views.

The brief required a fully structural solution capable of safely supporting the additional load introduced by the steel framework and glass balustrades while integrating seamlessly with the home’s architecture.

CHALLENGE

The original timber balcony had been supported by footings sized only for the lighter timber structure. Once the new design specification was assessed, it became clear the existing foundations were insufficient to support the increased weight of the steel subframe and structural glass system. This meant the installation could not proceed using the previous supports. Ground conditions and load requirements required a revised foundation approach to ensure long-term structural stability, compliance, and safety. The solution needed to strengthen the base without excessive disruption to the property’s exterior and landscaping.

SOLUTION

To overcome the limitation of the original footings, 360 GSS implemented a piling solution to provide the necessary structural support for the upgraded balcony system. Precision piles were installed to create deep, load-bearing foundations capable of supporting the new steel framework and glass installation safely and reliably. With the new foundations in place, a custom-fabricated freestanding steel subframe was installed. This independent structural system ensured the balcony loads were transferred directly to the new piles rather than relying on the property’s existing wall structure. Decking was then fitted to form the platform, followed by installation of the frameless glass balustrade system, completing the transformation from the previous timber structure to a modern architectural feature.

RESULT

The finished balcony delivers a striking visual upgrade while providing significantly improved structural performance. The frameless glass panels maximise natural light and views, while the engineered steel subframe and piled foundations ensure long-term strength and stability. What was once a dated timber installation is now a high-end architectural feature that enhances both the property’s usability and its external appearance.

CONCLUSION

This project highlights 360 GSS’s ability to adapt structural designs when site conditions change and engineer practical solutions that maintain safety without compromising aesthetics. By identifying the limitations of the existing footings and implementing a piling system, the team ensured the new balcony met all structural requirements while achieving the clean, modern finish the client envisioned. The result is a durable, visually refined installation that demonstrates how expert structural planning and fabrication can transform residential spaces and add lasting value to a home.
