A STUNNING WRAPAROUND TERRACE IN HAMPSHIRE

PROJECT OVERVIEW
This case study explores the design and installation of a stunning wraparound terrace for a beautiful home in Hampshire. The goal was to create an outdoor space that not only provided unobstructed views of the meticulously maintained grounds, but also featured durable, low-maintenance materials. The project included the installation of aluminium copings, a steel sub-frame, composite Millboard® decking, and toughened and laminated frameless glass balustrades.
CHALLENGE
The primary challenge was to construct a terrace that would withstand the elements, require minimal maintenance, and offer seamless views of the surrounding landscape.
Additionally, the structure needed to be durable enough to last for years without significant wear and tear and also be compliant with building regulations.

CHALLENGE
To achieve these goals, the following materials and solutions were selected:
ALUMINIUM COPING
Weather Resistance: Aluminium coping was chosen for its excellent resistance to weathering. Unlike traditional materials, aluminium does not rust, corrode, or deteriorate when exposed to the elements, making it ideal for an outdoor setting.
Protection and Aesthetics: Aluminium coping provides a protective cap over the edge of the terrace, preventing water ingress into the structure below. This protection is crucial in prolonging the life of the terrace. Additionally, aluminium can be powder-coated in various colours, allowing for a flawless aesthetic that complements the home's design.
STEEL SUB FRAME
Durability and Strength: A steel sub-frame was implemented to provide a robust foundation for the terrace. Steel is incredibly strong and can support heavy loads without bending or warping, ensuring the longevity of the terrace’ structure.
Water Ingress and Thermal Bridging: Unlike traditional methods that involve fixing into the existing building structure, a steel sub-frame minimises issues related to water ingress and thermal bridging. Thermal bridging occurs when materials that are poor insulators allow heat to pass through, causing energy loss and making it difficult to retain heat in your home. The steel sub-frame mitigates this by providing a more uniform and insulated structure, enhancing the overall energy efficiency of the home.
MILLBOARD® COMPOSITE DECKING
Low Maintenance: Millboard® composite decking was selected for its low maintenance requirements. Unlike natural wood, composite decking does not need regular staining or sealing, and is resistant to rot, mould, and insect damage.
Durability, Aesthetics, and High Performance: Millboard® decking, is designed to withstand heavy foot traffic and harsh weather conditions without fading, cracking, or splintering. It offers the look and feel of natural wood, providing a beautiful and practical solution for the terrace. Millboard® decking, in particular, is known for its exceptional performance in outdoor environments. Made from a unique blend of polyurethane and mineral stone, it is incredibly durable and resistant to wear and tear.
Slip Resistance: One of the standout benefits of Millboard® decking is its slip-resistant surface, which remains effective even in wet conditions. This ensures the safety of those using the terrace, making it an ideal choice for a family home.
TOUGHENED & LAMINATED FRAMELESS GLASS BALUSTRADES
Unobstructed Views: To complete the terrace and provide an uninterrupted view of the beautifully manicured grounds, toughened and laminated frameless glass balustrades were installed. These balustrades offer maximum transparency, creating a seamless connection between the terrace and the landscape.
Safety and Durability: Toughened glass is up to five times stronger than regular glass, and laminated glass adds an extra layer of security by holding together even if shattered. This combination ensures the balustrades are both safe and durable, withstanding strong winds and impacts without compromising on safety.
RESULTS
The completed wraparound terrace for this Hampshire home successfully combines aesthetic appeal with practical durability.
The aluminium coping protects the structure while adding a modern touch, the steel sub-frame ensures a sturdy and thermally efficient foundation, and the composite and Millboard® decking provide a long-lasting, low-maintenance surface.
The frameless toughened and laminated glass balustrades offer unobstructed views of the stunning grounds, creating a breathtaking outdoor space that seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings.
Additionally, the client was provided with structural calculations and reports from our highly accredited structural engineers, ensuring peace of mind and confirming the integrity of the build.
The result is a beautiful, functional, and durable terrace that enhances the home's value and the homeowners' enjoyment of their property.
