CUSTOM SHOWER WITH EXPOSED OAK BEAMS

OVERVIEW
Exposed oak beams are a hallmark of rustic charm and historical design, often found in period properties or homes designed with a natural aesthetic. However, integrating these beams into modern bathrooms, particularly in shower areas, presents a unique challenge due to the high-moisture environment. This case study explores how 360 GSS successfully blended modern glass shower enclosures with exposed oak beams to create a beautiful, functional bathroom without compromising the integrity of the wood.

CHALLENGE

The client wanted to incorporate the natural beauty of exposed oak beams into their bathroom design, which included a modern glass shower enclosure. The challenge was to protect the oak beams from the high levels of moisture and humidity present in a bathroom, particularly in areas directly exposed to water, such as above the shower. The client wanted to avoid cladding the beams, seeking a solution that would retain the natural, rustic charm of the wood while ensuring its long-term durability.

SOLUTION
T
o preserve the character and authenticity of this rustic bathroom while incorporating a modern glass shower enclosure, a thoughtful and practical design approach was essential. Here’s how we achieved the perfect balance between functionality and aesthetics:

Protecting the Oak Beams: The exposed oak beams are a key feature of the space, and ensuring their longevity was a priority. A high-quality clear varnish was applied to the beams, protecting the wood from moisture and mildew while retaining its natural beauty and texture. The varnish also enhances the rich tones of the oak, complementing the modern bathroom fixtures.

Minimal Hardware Glass Shower: To maintain the focus on the original beams, we opted for a glass shower enclosure with minimal hardware. This clean, unobtrusive design allows the beams to remain a prominent visual feature in the room, creating a seamless blend between the old and new elements. The minimalist fittings also contribute to the overall light and open feel of the space.

Steam Ventilation Gap: Recognising the challenges of shower steam in a small, enclosed space, we strategically left a gap between the top of the shower enclosure and the ceiling, just below the oak beam. This allows steam to escape naturally, preventing condensation build-up and protecting both the wood and the plastered surfaces. The design not only maintains airflow but also adds to the open, airy feel of the bathroom, making it both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

These carefully considered design choices ensure that the beauty of the original oak beams is preserved while delivering a modern, comfortable, and practical showering experience.

RESULTS
The result was a luxurious, spa-like bathroom that beautifully combined modern elements with rustic, natural oak beams. The glass shower enclosure provided a sleek, contemporary touch, while the exposed beams added warmth and character to the space. The solutions implemented by 360 GSS ensured that the oak beams were fully protected from moisture, allowing them to remain a defining feature of the room without the need for cladding.

  • The bathroom retained its rustic charm, with the exposed beams preserved in their natural state.

  • The waterproof varnish and glass screens provided long-lasting protection, ensuring the beams were shielded from water damage and humidity.

  • Excellent ventilation and strategic design choices minimised moisture build-up, reducing the need for constant maintenance.

This case study demonstrates how modern design and historical elements can work in harmony, creating a timeless space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. By choosing thoughtful, protective solutions, 360 GSS ensured the oak beams maintained their beauty for years to come.
